One Man’s 400-mile walk to save his village from Heathrow bulldozers

On Tuesday 4 April Hillingdon Council leader Ray Puddifoot and others well-wishers will gather in Harmondsworth at 11am as local man Neil Keveren, 50, sets off on a marathon 400-mile walk to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to ask Nicola Sturgeon why the SNP is backing a third runway at Heathrow and destruction of his home and village in the process (1).

The quest, which is estimated to take 394 miles, will commence on Tuesday 4 April and will finish on Thursday 27 April at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh (2). There will be a theme for each day and a number of campaigners and politicians will join Neil for sections of the walk. The route can be found below and covers places within Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, County Durham, Northumberland, Scottish Borders, Midlothian and Edinburgh.

Neil Keveren, who was born in the neighbouring village of Sipson and has lived in the area all his life, hopes that his walk will highlight the reasons a third runway should not go ahead.

Keveren, who built up a successful business in the area, said: “I am not one of nature’s natural walkers but I felt I had to do this for my family, my village and the wider campaign.”

Neil will also use Facebook Live to provide daily updates of his progress and any highlights of that particular day.

Further updates will be available on the Stop Heathrow Expansion twitter page @StopHeathrowExp.

The calendar of Neil’s walk is below:-

Harmondsworth – Uxbridge – Gerrards Cross – Chalfont – Amersham – Chesham

Harmondsworth resident Neil Keveren about to embark on a gruelling 400-mile walk from his home near Heathrow to Edinburgh. He wants to find out why the SNP supports a third runway at the airport in England that will cost taxpayers billions. We recorded this first piece to camera as a test for our coverage of Neil's remarkable journey, then a second quick update from Neil and Ray during a rest stop on day 1, and Neil has safely arrived in Chesham, Bucks, after a successful first day's walk from his home in Harmondsworth.

Getting an education is a very different experience for children who don't need adobe huts in the playground so that they can be shielded from some of the worst aircraft noise. If aircraft using Heathrow are "quiet" why has Heathrow spent £85,000 a time at the noisiest schools.

Original Planning:- 18 plus days is the expected time scale.
I have a driver of the wagon whilst I am walking - support driver Ray - he lives in Sipson and his home would be destroyed with a third runway. He moved into his house around 1954.
I have a team building to help with logistics. Ideas about getting a tablet to skyp or headcam.
Am going to take on board ideas at meeting possibly next week.
Am going to get some walking in with Emma/Danny.
I need to have a strategy assisted by Rob about meetings on the way, media M.Ps etc.
I need to get a media kit and some advice to ensure I make nice little clips,
I am aiming for April for reasons of weather.
Please confirm this is good timing politically.
Please chip in further thoughts re route etc, & do pass on any wisdom or observation you feel necessary. None of this is set in stone. Google maps might be handy for you if you putting to and from headings.
Neil

Objective:-
1. Deliver a request to the SNP in Edinburgh on the 25th April to please not support Heathrow's 3rd Runway. The economic promises Scotland has received from Heathrow are all lies.
2. Call in to Radio/TV Stations/MP's/Newspapers along the way to talk about Heathrows 3rd Runway.

And you're welcome to join him along the way!
